The organization's vice president, Carlos Cordeiro, won the election on the third ballot -- beating out Winograd and six other candidates including Hope Solo.
In his campaign, Winograd expressed concerns with the current state of U.S. Soccer, "particularly as it relates to the progress on the field and increasingly fractured nature of its constituency," he said.
Winograd, who raised two children with his wife in Ridgewood, played soccer in college and professionally overseas. He has been coaching for 20 years -- in both collegiate and youth games -- and has credited with his involvement in the creation of professional club soccer in the late 1990s.
